Harriet Hyams has been designing stained glass for over 35
years. The 32 foot high west windows in the sanctuary of The
Jewish Chapel at West Point designed by Max Abramovitz, the
prize winning Dominican Chapel, Our Lady of the Rosary in
Sparkill, New York by the Czech-born architect, Martin Holub,
and a stained glass wall for World Headquarters of Harcourt,
Brace, Jovanovich Inc., Orlando, Florida designed by the Ventura
Group exhibit her unique style. She designed a stained glass
skylight for a world class ocean going yacht (190 feet) that
was built in Brisbane, Australia to marine specification.
Besides liturgical projects she has done work for government
buildings, corporations, public buildings, schools for the
handicapped, high schools, residences, and many extraordinary
autonomous panels.
Working as a sculptor in her early career, carving stone
and wood and welding steel, Harriet Hyams with her love of
form and space added other dimensions to her work by incorporating
Light and Color. Her fourteen solo exhibits have also included
sculpture. Since 1987, she has produced and exhibited life
drawings in ink, charcoal and gouache. Her works are included
in public and private collections throughout the country.
She has traveled extensively to see and learn about old and
new stained glass throughout the world. This has brought scholarly
knowledge and unique perception to her own work.
She taught stained glass at Columbia University in the seventies.
Her work can be found on book covers, in art books, magazine
publications, and in film. She is a member of IFRAA, Affiliate
of A.I.A., and on the Accredited list of Synagogue Artists
and Craftsmen.
She is the recipient of two BENE Awards from Ministry and
Liturgy Magazine, 2002, for her stained glass at the Dominican
Chapel, Our Lady of the Rosary, Sparkill, New York.
She is the recipient of the Arthur Wesley Dow purchase award
from Columbia University. Her stained glass is in their permanent
Collection.
Her work was selected by the Corning Museum to be represented
in their Compendium exhibited worldwide.
She was a participant in the Fullbright Scholarship Selection
committee in the field of design, 1993, 1996 and 2000.
She received her B.A. from Rutgers University in English
and her M.A. from Columbia University in Art and Education.
Early on she worked and learned her craft in some of the most
prestigious studios in the New York Metropolitan area including
The Greenland Studio and the Jack Cushen Studio. Her projects
are at sites throughout the country.
Presently she is on the exhibition committee at the Rockland Center for the Arts, Nyack, NY, where she is co-curating an outdoor sculpture show to inaugurate the
Catherine Konner Sculpture Park in the Fall of 2006. |
